His Excelleney
The note from the fortuguese Ministry for Foreign Affairs enclosed in Your xcellency's despatch No. 147 of May 6th, 1927, atated that an enquiry would be held into the leakage of Indian opium into the Maeae market, further instances of which were transmitted for your information,
in my despatoh Zo. 284 of July 11th.

It was thought inadvisable at that time to press the Portuguese Government further, in view of the investigations they had promised to make and their declared intention to reform; but the direct statement made in the Portuguese report to the League of Nations on the opium traffic in Maoas, to the effect that Indian (Benares) opium has been imported from Kwang-Chew-Wan into that Colony, will undoubtedly provoke discussion at the next session of the Opium Advisory Committee in April, and I am consequently anxious to clear the issue as far as possible with the
Fortuguese authorities before the matter is brought to
public notice. I anelowe a copy of the statement in question I shall be glad, therefore, if you will remind the Fortuguese Government of the terms of their note of April 27th, enquire whether they are yet in a position to disclose the result of their investigations, and communicate to them the additional information enclosed in my despatch No. 284,
